Khairunnisha knows the power of education firsthand. After being displaced by communal violence, her education was the only thing that secured her a teaching job and a path to rebuild. For over two decades, she has defied deep-seated orthodoxy to create space for women to imagine different futures. She views the inevitable pushback not as a hurdle, but as proof that her work is hitting the mark.

Through Parwaz Sanstha, Khairunnisha runs a centre where young women receive remedial education, encouragement to re-enroll in school, and vocational training. Her approach is holistic, moving beyond the classroom to train women as community organisers. She also provides critical support systems, including counselling for domestic violence survivors and direct legal mediation through government centres like Naari Adalat.

Impact of the work
Over the last three years, Khairunnisha has helped 60 young women, many of them former dropouts, return to education. These women have also evolved into a network of community volunteers who address critical neighbourhood needs. To date, this network has helped 500 people secure rations under the National Food Security Act and mobilised 1,000 residents to access essential healthcare and medicines.
